Oscar Submission ‘My Life as a Zucchini’ Sold to GKids

VARIETY August 31th, 2016 | By Dave McNary

GKIDS has acquired North American distribution rights to the animated drama “My Life as a Zucchini,” Switzerland’s official submission for best foreign language Oscar.

The film, originally titled “Ma vie de Courgette,” is the debut feature from Swiss director Claude Barras, based on a script from Céline Sciamma (director-writer of “Girlhood” and “Tomboy”).

“My Life as a Zucchini” premiered in May in the Director’s Fortnight section at the Cannes Film Festival. It won the grand prize (Cristal) and the audience award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, and the audience award for best feature at the Melbourne International Film Festival.

Peter Debruge said in his review for Variety, “The cartoon is never afraid to be cute, but more importantly, it’s committed to being real.”

“My Life as a Zucchini” will make its North American premiere next month at the Toronto International Film Festival in the TIFF Kids section.

The story centers on titular Zucchini, a boy dealing with his mother’s sudden death who is befriended by a police officer and placed in a foster home. With the help of the officer and newfound friends, Zucchini eventually learns to trust and love, as he searches for a new family of his own.

“My Life as a Zucchini” is produced by RITA Productions, Blue Spirit Productions, Gebeka Films and KNM, in co-production with the RTS – Radio Télévision Suisse, SRG-SSR, France 3 Cinéma, Rhône Alpes Cinéma and Helium Films. The deal was negotiated by Eric Beckman for GKIDS and Nicolas Eschbach for Indie Sales.

Since 2008, GKIDS titles have received eight Oscar nominations: “The Secret of Kells” in 2010, “A Cat in Paris” and “Chico & Rita” in 2012, “Ernest & Celestine” in 2014, “The Tale of The Princess Kaguya” and “Song of the Sea” in 2015 and “Boy and the World” and “When Marnie Was There” in 2016.
